DID YOU KNOW???

Prescription drug reimbursement will be made for the cost of the lowest priced equivalent drug based on provincial regulations, unless the medical or dental practitioner has written that there is to be no substitution of the prescribed drug or medicine. The brand name drug will be eligible if the physician requests it or if there is no generic equivalent available. Also, if the brand name is less expensive than the generic, the brand name cost will be reimbursed.

If your plan is currently Generic with Equitable Life then you are already receiving the Lowest Cost Alternative.

It has recently come to our attention that many of our Group Benefit clients do not have a policy in place when it comes to employees who are off on Long Term Disability and how long these employees will remain on the employee benefit plan. We thought we would take a moment and update this blog regarding this conundrum and possible solutions available to your corporation.

The average time that we have found an employer will keep an employee on the benefit plan once they are off on long term disability is 12 months. The way that most companies carry out this policy is to post it somewhere that people can see and/or put it in the company handbook (if one exists). The length of time that benefits are continued needs to be consistent with all employees and we do recommend contacting your lawyer before making any changes.

We also wanted to ensure that you are aware of the other options available to employees when they are taken off the employee benefit plan, in terms of prescription drugs. There are two documents, one on Trillium and the Ontario Drug Benefit which are available to all Ontario residents who meet the requirements specified for each program, and the other is a Manulife product called Follow Me which is meant for individuals when they are leaving an employee benefit plan and in which there is no medical evidence necessary.

Equitable Life sent us the attached memo yesterday, and will be announcing in their December Plan Administrator Newsletter, that they now have alternative options available regarding claims submission!! All individuals with Equitable Life are now able to submit claims via fax or email effective in January via the EquitableHealth member website. All members will have a note on their Equitable Account telling them about the new available options but we wanted to ensure that all of our clients were aware of this exciting new option. This will cut down on the time it takes to receive payment back from Equitable Life as there is no mail time required!!
